When you’re hiring a small business, especially one that’ll be working on your home, you want to get it right the first time. That’s why many homeowners turn to Google reviews. But here’s the thing: not all five-star ratings are created equal.

Some reviews are bought. Some are fake. Some are so vague they could apply to any business in any industry. And if you’re not reading between the lines, you might miss some serious red flags.

So before you hire that roofer or siding contractor based on a glowing online presence, here’s what to actually look for in Google reviews.

1. Look for Reviews That Tell a Story

The most helpful reviews don’t just say, “Great work!” They give you context. They explain what the customer needed (a new roof, siding replacement, help after storm damage), how the business responded, and what the experience was like.

  • Did the crew communicate clearly?
  • Did the project stay on budget?
  • Were there delays?
  • Was cleanup handled professionally?

Detailed reviews paint a picture of what it’s like to work with that company, not just what the final result looked like.

2. Pay Attention to the Type of Repetition

If a company has 50 reviews that all say the same generic thing, “Great job! Fast! Would recommend!”, that’s not as reassuring as it seems. It could mean one of two things: either the business is aggressively soliciting template responses… or they’re paying for fake reviews.

On the other hand, if you notice repeated themes like “helped us navigate insurance,” “explained everything clearly,” or “cleaned up like they were never there”, those are signs of consistent quality. It means they’re showing up the same way for every customer, and that’s exactly what you want.

3. Watch Out for “Get In, Get Out” Contractors

Some contractors treat projects like a race. They show up, glance at your roof or siding for all of 3 seconds, toss out a rock-bottom quote, and if you hire them, they’re in and out before you’ve finished your morning coffee.

If reviews mention things like “they showed up, did the job, and were gone in a few hours,” but don’t include anything about communication, walkthroughs, or follow-ups? That’s worth a closer look.

Most roofers work fast. That’s not the problem. The real difference is whether they’re efficient, focused, thorough, and detail-oriented—or just rushing to the next job. When speed replaces care, you risk issues down the line: leaks, poor ventilation, or even voided warranties.

Efficiency means staying on schedule without sacrificing quality. And that’s the mark of a pro.

The reviews you want to see? The ones where the crew took time to explain the process, handled inspections properly, and double-checked everything before wrapping up. That kind of thoroughness is what separates a good experience from a complete nightmare.

4. Confirm the Business Is Who They Say They Are

One of the biggest risks in home construction right now is unlicensed contractors doing dangerous work. Some businesses slap together a website and start collecting deposits, without the proper insurance, training, or crew.

Before trusting a business with your home, use reviews to cross-reference who they really are. Look for:

  • Photos posted by customers (not just stock images)
  • Mentions of specific employees or owners by name
  • Projects that match what the business advertises on their website
  • A reasonable mix of recent and older reviews, if they all popped up in one month, something’s off

Protecting Your Family’s Home

Google reviews can be a powerful tool, but only if you read them with a critical eye. Look beyond the stars, dig into the details, and trust your gut. A little homework now can save you thousands down the line.
