New Hampshire winters punish weak roofs. Do a fast, focused prep and you will avoid leaks, ice problems, and last-minute emergencies. Use this checklist.

In November:

  1. Walk the exterior: replace missing or cracked shingles, nail down loose ridge caps, reseal exposed nail heads.
  2. Check flashing: press-test metal around chimneys, skylights, valleys, and sidewalls. If it moves or gaps, reseal or replace.
  3. Attic scan: look for stained sheathing, frost, or daylight at eaves. Top off insulation to about R-38 and clear soffit vents so air can flow to the ridge.
  4. Seal the lid: weatherstrip the attic hatch, foam gaps at bath fans, can lights, plumbing stacks, and wire penetrations.
  5. Clean drainage: clear gutters and downspouts, verify splash blocks or extensions carry water 5 feet from the foundation.

Before Snow Storms & Cold Snaps:

  1. Trim trees back from the roofline by 6–10 feet.
  2. Install snow guards on metal roofs and heat cable only in chronic trouble spots.
  3. Stock up on calcium chloride pellets and a wide push broom for ground-level cleanup.
  4. Mark hazards like buried vents, drains, and propane lines so they are visible after snowfall.
  5. Keep interior humidity in check by targeting 30–40 percent to reduce attic condensation.

After Each Snow Storm:

  1. Assess if there is wet, heavy snow on the lower eaves. Do not climb on an icy roof.
  2. Walk the interior ceilings. New stains, bubbling paint, or musty odors mean water is moving. Call a pro fast.

High-value upgrades for NH homes:

  1. Continuous ridge and soffit ventilation tuned to at least 1 sq ft of net free vent per 300 sq ft of attic floor.
  2. Insulated, gasketed attic hatch and ducted bath fans vented outdoors.
  3. Ice and water shield at eaves, valleys, and along sidewalls if your roof is nearing replacement.

What To Leave To A Pro:

  1. Removal of existing ice ridges.
  2. Flashing rebuilds at chimneys and skylights.
  3. Structural concerns such as sagging decks or repeated leaks.
